Welcome to Lancaster County, SC
LANCASTER COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER is a separate department from ANIMAL CONTROL. If you have information concerning strays, unrestrained or dangerous animals, please contact Animal Control at the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department at 803-283-3388, (Option 4).
The primary function of the Lancaster County Animal Shelter is to house and care for stray and surrendered animals. If stray pets are not claimed after a 5-day stray hold, the animal becomes the property of Lancaster County and are offered to animal rescues and to the public for adoption. There is a reclaim fee if your animal is brought to the shelter. You DO NOT need to be a Lancaster County Resident in order to adopt from the shelter.
Before animals leave the shelter for adoption, they are spayed or neutered (NO EXCEPTIONS), given booster shots, a rabies shot, de-wormed and micro-chipped. Adoption fees cover the costs of these services. Our goal here at the shelter is to help the over-population on cats and dogs by spaying and neutering all of our animals before they leave our facility.
LSPCA is a nonprofit rescue group. They assist the shelter by pulling animals and providing foster-care to make room for more animals, arranging rescue and transport to northern rescues, providing medical care for critical-need animals, helping photograph and network the animals on social media, providing medicines and tools for the surgical suite to facilitate spay & neuter surgeries, and more.
